An insurance investigator & an efficiency expert who hate each other are both hypnotized by a crooked hypnotist with a jade scorpion into stealing jewels. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 04/12/2005 Starring: Woody Allen Dan Aykroyd Run time: 102 minutes Rating: Pg13With The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Woody Allen pays another visit to his idealized past, and his retro blend of humor and nostalgia will surely satisfy the filmmaker's most loyal fans. Like The Purple Rose of Cairo, Radio Days, and Sweet and Lowdown, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion is physically impeccable: its period-perfect costumes and sets capture 1940 New York with splendid authenticity and are furth! er enhanced by the burnished glow of Zhao Fei's cinematography. And like those earlier films, Jade Scorpion mines comedic gold from its timeframe, molding it into a plot laced with expert zingers that could only spring from a keen awareness of comedic tradition. Add an appealing roster of costars (including Elizabeth Berkley and Charlize Theron) and you've got vintage Woody that perks right along.

The movie's also as trivial as it is engaging; hack off 30 minutes and it might have had the delirious precision of early Marx Brothers classics. Instead, Allen's goofy conceit--enemies falling in love by hypnotic suggestion--is stretched to absurdity when efficiency expert Betty Ann "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Helen Hunt) is hypnotically attracted to seasoned insurance investigator C.W. Briggs (Allen), despite their office enmity. Plus, a jewel-heist caper masterminded by the nightclub hypnotist (David Ogden Stiers) casts them both as suspects! Woody harvests a bumper crop of ! old-fashioned laughs from this predicament, and despite their ! conspicu ous age difference and occasional awkward delivery, Hunt and Allen exchange volleys of dialogue like a seasoned comedy team. Dan Aykroyd is also good in a stodgy supporting role, but Jade Scorpion remains a mixed blessing--a welcomed throwback to comedy's yesteryear, from a master funnyman who's struggling to maintain relevance in the present. --Jeff Shannon This digital document is an article from Semana, published by Spanish Publications, Inc. on August 24, 2001. WHEN HIS PARENTS ARE SAVAGELY MURDERED, CONAN IS CAPTURED AS A CHILD AND AFTER FIFTEEN YEARS OF AGONY, FORGES A MAGNIFICENT BODY AND INDOMITABLE SPIRIT. ONCE FREE, HE EMBARKS UPON A QUEST FOR ULTIMATE POWER TO SLAY THE EVIL ARCH-VILLAIN THAT ENSLAVED HIM. FEATURES: SPECIAL EFFECTS AND MUCH MORE.Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It's the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard's pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius's screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard's fantasy world. To avenge th! e murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Rather than allowing this brutal fate to conquer him, Conan builds an incomparable body and an indomitable spiritâ€"both of which he needs when he suddenly finds himself a free man. Basil Poledouris' exciting score to Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1982 barbarian epic. Conan The Barbarian was Arnold's big-screen breakthrough and was the film that launched his amazing film career, which eventually led the Austrian-born actor straight to the Governor's mansion! It also inspired the successful sequel, Conan The Destroyer and the semi-sequel, Red Sonja. 12 tracks. Warner Music. 2003.This early '80s sword-and-steroids epic by writer/director John Milius is notable for making a bankable action-star of Arnold Schwarzenegger and cementing the reputation of film composer Basil Poledouris (Robocop, Hunt For Red October, Free Willy, Starship Troopers). A dream assignment for a young composer eager to showcase the range his skills, the lusty Conan score hearkens back to the '30s heyday of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's unabashed Euro-classicism, but with enough modern rhythmic and percussive flourishes to sat! isfy the modern listener. Feeling Minnesota

  • Dolby Digital
  • Interactive Menus
Includes Widescreen and Fullscreen Versions. Original Theatrical Trailer. Filmographies. In his debut effort, director/writer Steven Baigleman put together an interesting premise and collected a talented cast to execute it. Unfortunately, he never sets the tone, so we are caught between a wildly black comedy and an emotionally brutal drama. A firmer footing in either genre would have better defined our reactions to it. Keanu Reeves plays Jjaks, a man so badly trod upon by fate that his very name is the result of a typo. He arrives back at his mother's house in a lower working-class Minnesota neighborhood to witness the marriage of his older brother (Vincent D'Onofrio) to an obviously reluctant bride (Cameron Diaz). By the time Jjaks is on his way, he's stolen a car, a dog, and his brother's wife. You have to give Baigleman credit for serving up intriguin! g characters. Unfortunately, he spins the story in circles instead of moving it along. Reeves and Diaz attempt to leave Minnesota, but never quite make it. Reeves repeatedly returns to a boyhood home he hates, always stumbling into his brother's angry clutches. What does work are the performances. Diaz is both sad and strong as the tough cookie who happens to be the smartest character in the movie. D'Onofrio's stupid nastiness is offset by his crushing love for her and an uncontrollable jealousy of Jjaks. Most surprising is Reeves, who makes us feel for his angry, unhappy loser by revealing flashes of decency under a toughened exterior. --Rochelle O'Gorman

An anthology of 6 tales that show Hal ! Jordan a nd the Green Lanterns policing the galaxy a la “Gotham Knights.”A crash course in all things Green Lantern is offered in Emerald Knights, a DC Universe Animated Original feature that details the history of Hal Jordan and his Green Lantern Corps cohorts in an engaging and action-packed anthology film. Taking its cue from 2008's Batman: Gotham Knight, Emerald Knights spins the origin stories for Jordan and four pioneer members of the corps--Kilowog, Laira, Mogo, and Abin Sur--as a sort of inspiration for newly minted member Arisia (whom longtime GLC fans will know as Arisia Rrab) before she joins them in battle against the exiled scientist turned pure energy being Krona, who poses a threat to the entire universe. The five stories, including that of Jordan joining the corps, hew closely to the original source material, thanks to the presence of writers like DC Comics' chief creative officer Geoff Johns, fellow Green Lantern writers Peter J. Tomas! i and Eddie Berganza, Dave Gibbons (Watchmen), and Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, who penned the live-action Green Lantern that will undoubtedly spur many viewers to seek out this feature. The stories are dramatic and well scripted, and avoid the clunky linking devices that plagued Gotham Knight, and the voice cast, led by fan favorite Nathan Fillion (Castle) as Hal Jordan and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Arisia, is solid, with contributions by Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) as Abin Sur and Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter's Lucius Malfoy) as Sinestro among the highlights. The animation is also top-notch, with the interplanetary scenes rendered with an impressively cosmic sweep. Extras, however, are limited to sneak peeks of DCU's All-Star Superman and Batman: Year One. --Paul Gaita
